Going from 3 to 4 hearts takes about 200-250 single treats, and going from 4 to 5 takes easily 350-400, so start working on this as soon as possible on your favorite Familiar. When you feed them a certain amount, their affection level will go up. Each Familiar type has a favorite treat, which will grant more growth/affection than other treats (for example, Oliver's first Familiar, Mitey, likes chocolate).

Your goal is to get an Familiar to a full 5 hearts of affection. When you go to the cage option in the menu, you can feed your Familiar treats and raise their affection/stats. Just make sure he learns Sling Stone and War Cry, and he'll also make grinding/farming much faster as well (he also can be found in the cliffs north of Al Mamoon.)

He will make all bounty quests and the Solosseum Series significantly easier on you. Even at level 1, with decent gear he can easily outdamage everything you've got. One of these is Dinoceros, who is insanely strong both on offense and defense. Once you've done this, he gives you 3 Familiar tickets (trade for the Familiar at the Temple of Trials). Once you've cleared the game, make sure you've cleared all of Derwin's quests to show him specific Familiars, and then find him in Ding Dong Dell for errand 75, which involves you killing 3 boss Familiar around the world. Decent tanks include Tin-man (found around Hamelin), and Monolith (found around Castaway Cove). While you can get through the main game with pretty much any Familiar you want, a good tip is to make sure you have a tank Familiar (shield type or armor+hammer) with a taunt for when you need to recover. The Compendium book will reveal recipes that may not show up on the pot's list, as well as where to buy any weapons/armor that are not created from recipes. He also has a nice checklist of your percentage completion on quests, recipes, etc, and tracks how many hidden treasures you've found. Telling Stone has all the info on Familiars - where they spawn, what they drop, what type they are, which ones you have recruited, etc. This game comes with its own databases for you to reference to make it easier for you to find what you need, as well. It's not as simple as it sounds, but everything is more a matter of time and patience rather than actual effort, so no detail is necessary. Visit every area, collect the hidden treasure chests, buy tickets at the casino, make 120 recipes, recruit 250 Familiars, clear all errands, and clear the Solosseum Series.
Everything should be done alongside each other. Once you've cleared the game, you can focus on all the other aspects. Once you've beaten the main game, you should have (at bare minimum): Pick a few Imajinn that you like, and feed them treats at every possible chance. Make sure you are recruiting every Imajinn you can (aim to have 2 of all the first/second forms of each one), and try to make every recipe you find. As you progress through the game, make sure you keep your levels high, because the difficulty spikes a bit in the last dungeon. As long as you follow those stars, you can't get lost. The game itself is very simple, and gives you objective stars to tell you where to advance.
